Mr. John R. Smith, a resident of Winchester and formerly of Milton, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton. He was 69.
John was born on December 12, 1942 in Somerville, one of four children of the late John J. Smith and Edna A. (Rasmussen) Smith. He was raised and educated in Milton where he graduated from high school. He honorably served our country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. John worked as a ticket agent for American Airlines in Boston and Dallas, as a customer service representative for Verizon, and most recently as a clerk at Stop and Shop in Winchester.
While working for the airline, John enjoyed the ability to travel extensively throughout the world. John was also a lover of sports. He was a Red Sox fan, a season ticket holder for the Boston Bruins, and loved going to NASCAR races.
He was the beloved son of the late John J. Smith and Edna A. (Rasmussen) Smith. Loving brother of Kathleen M. Dolan and her husband William T. Dolan, Jr. of Melrose, Robert I. Smith and his wife Sheila of Dallas, TX and William F. Smith of Scarborough, ME. Dear uncle of many loving nieces and nephews. Also survived by many dear friends, especially Christel Clayton of Foxboro.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember John's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, January 26 from 4-8 PM and again on Friday morning at 9:00 AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Interment with military honors presented by the US Army in Milton Cemetery.
Gifts in honor of John may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
