Mr. Donald M. Washburn, a longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side, on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Renaissance Gardens of Brooksby Village in Peabody. He was 93.
Donald was born in Boston on December 2, 1917, one of five sons of the late Henry C. Washburn and Eva F. (Seaverns) Washburn.
Raised and educated in Melrose, Mr. Washburn graduated from the Bentley School of Accounting. He proudly served his country during World War II in the US Army Air Corps. As a member of the Fighter Squadron, he was stationed in England, France, and Germany. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to his working career as a shoe wholesaler for Lane Brothers of Boston. Mr. Washburn worked for the company from 1935 until his retirement as a part owner in 1983.
Don was an active 65-year member of the First Congregational Church where he served as an usher for many years. He was a great bowler, enjoyed gardening, playing cribbage, and loved watching all sports.
Donald was the beloved husband of Shirley (Eaton) Washburn with whom he shared 23 years of marriage, the late Marjorie (Fleury) Washburn, and the late Helen (McPheters) Washburn. Devoted father of Linda J. Rocheford and her husband Paul of Webster, NH and stepfather of Carolyn S. Ogren of Middleton. Dear brother of Raymond S. Washburn of Lincoln, RI, the late Dr. Rev. Gordon H. Washburn, and the late Harold and Roger Washburn. Cherished grandfather of Jamie Rocheford of Webster, NH, John Ogren of Rowley, Amanda Moda of Reading, and Jeff Ogren of Georgetown. Loving great grandfather of Danielle, Hennix, Vivian, Anabel and Tristan. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
